Summer school Topic

"Risks and Challenges of the Network Society"
4-8 August 2003, Karlstad University, Sweden

Mobile phones, i-Mode, WAP, telephone, fax, e-mail, Internet and personal digital assistants (PDAs) are dominating our society – which is fast becoming a Network society characterised by electronic communications. While these developments bring many social and economic benefits, they also pose several social, ethical, political and cultural consequences and challenges.

The focus of the Summer School will be on the Risks and Challenges of the Network Society as manifested in such areas as: ( Call for Contribution)

Digital divide Developing countries
Privacy Usability
Vulnerability and Dependency Health Care
Cybercrime & Security Electronic Commerce
Multilateral Security Electronic Government
Ethics Cultural dimensions of technology
Gender issues Law

Three IFIP working groups (working groups 9.2, 9.6/11.7, and 9.8), in cooperation with Karlstad University and HumanIT, are devoting an entire Summer School to these topics. Its dates are August 4-8, 2003 inclusive. The venue will be Karlstad University in Sweden.

Ph.D. students, who participate at the summer school and either present a paper or write a paper summarizing and reflecting results of the summer school, will be awarded with 2 Swedish credit points (corresponding to three ECTS).
