Introduction to Research Studies in Computer Science (1.5 Credits)

Course Aims

The intent of the course is to introduce the student to research studies in computer science. The student should also be familiar with the process of how to get a PhD degree in computer science at Karlstad University.

Course Content

The course is based on self studies of literature on how to get a PhD degree, discussions with the supervisor(s) on the PhD process, and attendance of at least one Licentiate and one PhD defense on a Swedish university.

Teaching and Examination

The course is a mandatory self-study course at the department of computer science. In order to pass the course the student is required to study the literature and discuss its content with the supervisor(s). Based on the discussion, a letter of agreement should be constructed in order to provide a mutual understanding of what is required. The student is also required to attend one PhD defense and one Licentiate thesis defense at a Swedish university and orally report his or her experiences to the supervisor(s).

Specific Prerequisites

Enrollment in the graduate program in computer science or permission of instructor.
